Born in Câmara de Lobos on November 23, 1887, he later studied at the seminary in Funchal and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1913. Alongside his religious work, he built a wide-ranging literary and journalistic career centered on Madeira’s history, customs, and cultural identity.
He also served as an army chaplain during the First World War and, after the war, remained active in Funchal as both a teacher and a writer. His journalism began in student religious periodicals and expanded into regular collaboration with newspapers and magazines in Madeira and Lisbon.
His published work includes titles such as Ilhas de Zargo, Delenda est Carthago!, Cristóvão Colombo, A lenda de Machim, Geografia Histórica das Capitanias da Madeira, and Arte Religiosa na Madeira. He died in Funchal on March 3, 1976, and is remembered especially for documenting the history and ethnography of Madeira.
