Born in Câmara de Lobos, Madeira, on November 23, 1887, Eduardo Clemente Nunes Pereira became a Catholic priest and was ordained in 1913. He also worked as a teacher at the Funchal lyceum and contributed to newspapers in the city, building a career that moved easily between religious life, education, journalism, and writing.
His published work was wide-ranging. Early books included Delenda est Carthago (1913) and the poetry collection Golpes (1914), while his best-known achievement was Ilhas de Zargo, a major work on the history of Madeira. Sources also describe him as a publicist and ethnographer, reflecting his long interest in the island’s people, customs, and past.
He died in Funchal on March 3, 1976. Today he is remembered as one of the writers most closely associated with documenting and interpreting Madeira’s history and cultural identity.
