About the author

Born in Dijon on February 4, 1862, Édouard Estaunié built a rare double career in science and literature. Trained as an engineer, he worked in the French Post and Telegraph service and later became inspector general of telegraphs, while publishing his first novels in 1891.

His fiction moved from naturalist beginnings toward closely observed psychological novels, often set in provincial France. Readers remember him for the calm, serious way he explored conscience, family life, religion, and the hidden pressures shaping ordinary people.

Estaunié was elected to the Académie française in 1923, a sign of the respect he had earned in French letters. He died in Paris in 1942, leaving behind a body of work that stands at the meeting point of technical modernity and intimate moral drama.
