Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in 1867, Edna Henry Lee Turpin was an American author and editor whose work was closely tied to education. She attended Hollins and went on to build a career writing and adapting books for children and students, especially in literature, history, and reading instruction.
Her bibliography includes school readers, poetry collections, retellings, and classroom texts such as A Child's Book of Poetry, The Lee Readers, and Brief Biographies from American History. She also worked on editions of well-known works for younger audiences, helping bring classic material to school and home readers in an accessible way.
Turpin died in 1952. Although she is not widely known today, her writing shows the important role early twentieth-century authors played in shaping what generations of children read in school.
