About the author

Edna Henry Lee Turpin was an American author born on July 26, 1867, at Echo Hill in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. She grew up on the family farm with her mother and older brother, began writing early, and had her first short story accepted for publication while still in her fifteenth year. She later graduated from Hollins College.

Over a long writing life, she produced and edited books for children and general readers, including history texts, nature-themed works, fiction, and classroom editions of classic literature. Her bibliography includes A Short History of the American People, Echo Hill, and edited collections such as Grimm's Fairy Tales and selections from Edgar Allan Poe.

She never married and was described as deeply devoted to literary work. For many years she lived and worked at Mountain Lake Biological Station in Virginia, contributing to its scientific and artistic community, and she died on June 8, 1952.
