About the author

Edmund Verney Wyatt-Edgell was a British Army officer in the 17th Lancers and co-author, with Waller Ashe, of The Story of the Zulu Campaign, first published in 1880. The book draws on military experience to recount the Anglo-Zulu War, and later editions and library records continue to credit him as one of its authors.

Available biographical records describe him as born on August 16, 1845, educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and widely regarded as a strong classical and French scholar. The same records also note that he traveled extensively, including a long ride through Persia during a winter leave.

He was killed in action at the Battle of Ulundi on July 4, 1879, while serving as a captain in the 17th Lancers. Because of that, his name remains tied not only to a historical account of the campaign, but also to the conflict itself.
