by Edmund S. (Edmund Simon) Lorenz
Born in North Lawrence, Ohio, in 1854, Edmund Simon Lorenz grew up in a family deeply involved in church life. Sources describe him as a pastor, educator, composer, and editor who studied at Otterbein University, Union Biblical Seminary, Yale Theological Seminary, and the University of Leipzig.
Lorenz is best remembered for his work in sacred music. He edited and compiled hymnals and song collections, wrote religious music and devotional material, and became an important figure in American Sunday school and church publishing. The company he founded in 1890 went on to become the Lorenz publishing company.
He died in Dayton, Ohio, in 1942. Although not a household name today, his work had a lasting place in Protestant church music, especially in the practical, singable collections used by congregations, choirs, and Sunday schools.
