About the author

Born in Vienna on January 9, 1857, Edmund Oskar von Lippmann studied chemistry in Zurich and Heidelberg before building a career in the sugar industry. He worked in sugar refineries in Austria and Germany and became closely associated with the refinery at Halle, where he spent much of his professional life.

Alongside his industrial work, he developed a strong reputation as a historian of science. He wrote extensively on sugar chemistry and on the history of sugar, and he also published studies on alchemy, medicine, and the development of scientific thought. His writing earned him several honorary doctorates and major scholarly honors.

He died in Halle on September 24, 1940. Today he is remembered both as an accomplished chemist and as a careful, wide-ranging historian who helped preserve the story of early chemistry and related sciences.
