About the author

Born in 1849, Edmund Michael was a German mycologist, botanist, and nonfiction writer. He studied agronomy in Leipzig and later taught at the agricultural academy in Auerbach, where he built a reputation as a careful observer of fungi and an enthusiastic popularizer of natural history.

His best-known work was Führer für Pilzfreunde (Guide for Mushroom Lovers), a field guide that introduced readers to commonly found edible, suspicious, and poisonous mushrooms. The book became widely known, and he also organized many mushroom exhibitions that drew large audiences, helping turn specialist knowledge into something practical and approachable for the public.

Michael died in 1920. He is still remembered for making mushroom identification more accessible at a time when clear, usable guides could make a real difference for both curiosity and safety.
