About the author

Born in Edinburgh on 17 September 1872, Edmund Francis Sellar was the youngest son of the classical scholar Professor William Young Sellar. He died on 18 May 1918 in Roxburghshire, Scotland, at the age of 45.

Very little biographical information about him is easy to confirm today, but surviving catalog and library records show that he wrote historical books including The Story of Lord Roberts and The Story of Nelson. Those works were published for younger readers and focus on well-known military and naval heroes, suggesting a talent for brisk, accessible storytelling.

Although he is not widely known now, Sellar's work has lasted through library collections and modern digital editions. The Story of Nelson remains available through Project Gutenberg, which has helped keep his writing in circulation for new readers.
