An Irish novelist, editor, and publisher from Waterford, he helped shape literary life in London while also writing fiction of his own. Best known for Through Green Glasses, he moved easily between journalism, publishing, and storytelling.

About the author

Born in Waterford on July 24, 1856, he was educated locally before moving to London, where he worked as a journalist for many years. He also became active in Irish literary circles there, building a career that connected writing, editing, and publishing.

Alongside his own fiction and nonfiction, he played an important role as a publisher. He was associated first with Ward & Downey and later with his own firm, Downey & Co., and is remembered as part of the early Irish literary revival as well as for supporting other writers.

His best-known book is Through Green Glasses (1887), and he also wrote under the pen name F. M. Allen. He died in Waterford on February 11, 1937.
