About the author

Born in Geneva in 1889, Edmond Privat was a Francophone Swiss author, journalist, historian, and university professor whose life became closely tied to the international Esperanto movement. He studied at the University of Geneva and built a reputation not only as a writer, but also as a public speaker and advocate for international understanding.

Privat wrote across many forms, including dramas, poems, stories, textbooks, and historical works. He is especially remembered for books about Esperanto and for his biography of L. L. Zamenhof, which helped introduce the language's founder and ideals to a wider readership.

His interests reached beyond literature into public life. He was active in peace work, lectured for the World Peace Foundation, and remained associated with efforts to encourage dialogue across national borders. He died in 1962, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both literary curiosity and a strong belief in international cooperation.
