About the author

Born in Geneva in 1889, Edmond Privat was a Swiss author and public intellectual who wrote in both French and Esperanto. He studied at the University of Geneva and became known not only as a writer and lecturer, but also as a committed advocate for peace and international understanding.

Privat played an important role in the Esperanto movement during its formative decades. He wrote widely about the language and its community, and his best-known works include Vivo de Zamenhof, an early biography of Esperanto’s creator, L. L. Zamenhof. His writing ranged across biography, history, teaching, drama, poetry, and journalism, which helped make him one of the movement’s most versatile literary figures.

Alongside his literary work, he was active in public causes connected with peace and international cooperation. That mix of activism and storytelling gives his books an unusual energy: they are not only records of a movement, but also the work of someone who believed language could bring people closer together. Privat died in 1962.
