About the author

Born in Colmar on October 15, 1838, Edmond Dupouy was a French doctor, journalist, and author. He earned a medical degree in Paris in 1869 and wrote on subjects that moved between medicine, history, and social life.

His best-known works include Le moyen âge médical and studies of prostitution in antiquity and in modern times. English-language readers may also know him through Medicine in the Middle Ages, drawn from his writing on medieval medicine.

Dupouy is also remembered as one of the early figures associated with French spiritism. He died in Saint-Cloud on August 3, 1920.
