A 19th-century German writer and theater leader, he moved between country estate life, public service, and the stage. His career joined literature with practical cultural work, from writing stories and plays to directing major court theaters.

by Edler Herr von und zu Gustav Heinrich Gans Putlitz
Born on March 20, 1821, at Retzin in the Prignitz region, Gustav Heinrich Gans Edler Herr zu Putlitz came from an old Brandenburg noble family. He studied law in Berlin and Heidelberg, then worked in government service in Magdeburg before turning more fully toward literature and theater.
Putlitz became known as a writer, landowner, and theater administrator. Sources describe him as director of the court theater in Schwerin and later as general director of the court theater in Karlsruhe. Alongside this work, he wrote fiction and plays, and English-language reference sources identify him simply as a German author.
He died at Retzin on September 5, 1890. What makes him interesting now is the mix of roles he held: not only a novelist and dramatist, but also a cultural organizer whose life connected provincial estate society, Prussian public life, and the German stage.
