About the author

Born in Chatham Center, Ohio, on August 12, 1854, Edith Matilda Thomas was encouraged in the arts from an early age. She studied at the normal school in Geneva, Ohio, and also attended Oberlin College, though she did not complete a degree.

Thomas published her first collection, A New Year's Masque and Other Poems, in 1885. She later moved to New York, where she contributed poetry and prose to magazines and continued building a reputation as a poet and essayist. Reference sources consistently describe her as an American writer whose work helped bring both natural landscapes and modern city life into lyric poetry.

She died in New York City on September 13, 1925. Today she is remembered for a body of work that bridges nineteenth-century literary traditions and a more modern, urban sensibility.
