About the author

Born on April 26, 1897, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Edith Ballinger Price grew up in an artistic family and was encouraged early by her grandfather, the painter William Trost Richards. She studied art in Boston and New York, then built a career as both a writer and illustrator, creating books, stories, and artwork for young readers.

She is especially remembered for her children's books and for the imagination she brought to them through both words and pictures. Price also had a lasting connection to the Girl Scouts: she is widely credited as one of the founders of the Brownie program, helping develop the woodland, fairy-tale world that became part of its identity.

Price spent much of her life connected to Newport, Rhode Island, and later moved to Virginia Beach, where she died on September 29, 1997, at the age of 100. Her papers and artwork have been preserved in archival collections, reflecting a creative life that lasted nearly a century.
