About the author

Ebenezer Pearse was a British printer and bookseller associated with Swansea, Wales. Records gathered by Welsh heritage sources identify him as originally from Bristol, with census material placing him and his family at 17 Wind Street in Swansea in 1851.

He is best known for compiling Pearse's Commercial Directory to Swansea and the Neighbourhood, for 1854, a remarkably detailed local directory that lists businesses, residents, public services, and practical information about the town and surrounding district. Today, the book is valued less as a conventional literary work than as a rich historical record of everyday urban and commercial life in mid-19th-century Wales.

Available records on Pearse himself are fairly limited, which makes his surviving work all the more interesting. Through the careful, practical detail of his directory, he preserved a lively picture of Swansea during a period of major change.
