About the author

Born in Scotland in 1775, Thomas Cochrane built his reputation in the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He became famous for daring ship actions and for attacking larger enemies with speed, surprise, and nerve, earning admiration as one of the navy’s most brilliant captains.

His life was not a straightforward hero’s tale. He also served in Parliament and was caught up in the 1814 Stock Exchange fraud scandal, a conviction that damaged his career for years. Even so, his naval gifts remained in demand, and he later played important roles in the fight for independence in Chile, in the navy of Brazil, and in support of Greece.

By the end of his life, Cochrane had been restored to honor in Britain and succeeded as the 10th Earl of Dundonald. He died in 1860, leaving behind a story so dramatic that he is often seen as one of the inspirations for the great fictional sea captains of historical adventure fiction.
