About the author

Born in Scotland in 1775, Thomas Cochrane became famous in the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He earned a reputation for bold tactics, speed, and a habit of taking on larger enemies, which made him one of the most colorful seamen of his age.

His life was not a straightforward heroic tale. Alongside his naval fame, he served as a radical member of Parliament and became caught up in the 1814 stock exchange fraud scandal, a conviction that badly damaged his career for a time. Later, he rebuilt his reputation and went on to command naval forces for Chile, Brazil, and Greece during their struggles for independence.

Cochrane eventually returned to favor in Britain and succeeded to the earldom of Dundonald. He died in 1860, remembered as an audacious admiral whose life mixed brilliance, controversy, and adventure on an almost novelistic scale.
