About the author
Born in London on November 8, 1831, he was the son of the novelist and politician Edward Bulwer-Lytton. He entered the diplomatic service while still young and served in a series of European postings, building the kind of international career that would define much of his life.
Alongside politics and diplomacy, he became well known as a poet under the name Owen Meredith. His writing reached a wide readership in his own lifetime, giving him a public literary identity separate from his official work.
He served as Viceroy of India from 1876 to 1880, a role that placed him at the center of major imperial events and lasting historical debate. Later he returned to diplomatic service and died in Paris on November 24, 1891.
