About the author

Born in 1871, the 27th Earl of Crawford was a British Conservative politician, art connoisseur, and writer who was known formally as David Alexander Edward Lindsay. He inherited a major title and moved easily between public service and intellectual life, gaining notice for his interest in art, libraries, and historical scholarship.

As an author, he is especially associated with writing on Renaissance art, including books on Donatello and on the development of Italian sculpture. Those works reflect the same seriousness that shaped his wider reputation: he was not simply a collector, but someone deeply engaged with the study of art and culture.

He died in 1940. For listeners coming to him through his books, what stands out is the combination of authority and enthusiasm: he wrote as someone who loved the subject and had spent years thinking about it carefully.
