E. W. (Everett Williams) Jameson

b. 1921

A longtime UC Davis zoologist and naturalist, he wrote clearly and accessibly about mammals, birds of prey, and the natural world of California. His work reflects both a scientist’s eye for detail and a field biologist’s love of close observation.

About the author

Born in 1921, Everett "Bill" Jameson Jr. was a zoologist who spent much of his career on the faculty at the University of California, Davis, where he taught from 1948 to 1988. He became especially well known for his work on mammals and for helping readers understand California wildlife in practical, readable terms.

Jameson wrote and co-wrote several books, including California Mammals with Hans J. Peeters. UC Davis also remembered him as a falconer as well as a zoologist, a combination that fits the hands-on, outdoors-minded character of his work.

He died in August 2010. Even in brief notices about his life, he comes across as the kind of scholar who stayed close to the living world he studied, sharing that knowledge through teaching, research, and books for general readers as well as specialists.
