E. Smyth

A bold English composer, writer, and suffrage campaigner, she built a career on her own terms at a time when women were often shut out of professional music. Her life and work still stand out for their energy, independence, and refusal to follow the rules.

About the author

Born in 1858, Ethel Smyth became one of the most distinctive British musical figures of her time. She studied seriously in Leipzig after pushing against her family's wishes, and went on to compose operas, choral works, chamber music, and orchestral music.

She was also an accomplished writer. Alongside her music, she published books and memoirs that helped shape her public voice, and she became closely associated with the women's suffrage movement in Britain.

Smyth was made a Dame in 1922, a rare recognition for a woman composer of her era. She died in 1944, and her reputation has continued to grow as new listeners and readers rediscover both her music and her sharp, vivid writing.
