Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1867, Edward Rhodes Stitt built a long career as a physician in the United States Navy. He became known not only as a naval medical officer but also as a teacher and author whose writing aimed to make diagnosis and disease prevention more useful in everyday practice.

Stitt was closely associated with the Naval Medical School and later served as Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy from 1920 to 1928. He worked during a period when the Navy was expanding its reach overseas, and he became especially linked with tropical medicine, sanitation, and the training of medical officers for service in difficult environments.

As an author, he wrote medical works on subjects including diagnostics and tropical diseases, helping bring specialist knowledge to a wider professional audience. He died in 1948, leaving behind a career that joined military service, public health, and medical education.
