About the author

After graduating from Yale in 1826, he taught school for several years before being ordained in 1832. He served briefly as a pastor in New York City, then moved into academic life, teaching sacred literature at Western Reserve College and later Hebrew and biblical studies at Andover Theological Seminary and Oberlin.

Barrows wrote widely on biblical interpretation, sacred geography, and Christian biography. His books were meant to guide serious readers rather than specialists alone, and they helped make scholarly study of the Bible more accessible to ordinary ministers and students.

Remembered as both a clergyman and a writer, he belonged to a generation of Protestant educators who tried to combine faith, disciplined study, and classroom teaching. That mix gives his work a steady, thoughtful voice that still reflects the religious and educational world of 19th-century America.
