About the author

Born in Connecticut in the early 1800s, Elijah Porter Barrows became known as both a minister and a teacher of biblical studies. He graduated from Yale and was ordained in the 1830s, beginning a career that combined church leadership with serious scholarship.

He served as pastor of the First Free Presbyterian Church in New York and later taught for many years at Western Reserve College, Andover Theological Seminary, and Oberlin. His work focused especially on sacred literature and Hebrew, helping train generations of students for ministry and theological study.

Barrows also wrote and edited religious works that kept his name in circulation beyond the classroom, including reference and devotional material used by Protestant readers in the 19th century. He is remembered today as a representative figure in American theological education during a period when colleges, seminaries, and churches were closely connected.
