E. Louise (Emma Louise) Smythe

E. Louise Smythe (Emma Louise Smythe, 1858–1915) was an American author associated with early children’s education and reading instruction. Her best-known book, A Primary Reader: Old-time Stories, Fairy Tales and Myths Retold by Children, was published in 1896 and grew out of reading lessons prepared for first-grade pupils in the Santa Rosa public schools.

Smythe’s approach was notably hands-on: stories were discussed, retold orally by children, and then shaped into reading material using language suited to their developing vocabularies. The collection introduces young readers to fairy tales, classical and Norse mythology, and familiar literary heroes while encouraging an early love of books.

She also contributed Reynard the Fox, published by the American Book Company in 1903. Her surviving works reflect a lasting interest in making traditional stories engaging, understandable, and meaningful for children.
