About the author

Born in Berlin on November 6, 1841, Else Schmieden wrote under the pseudonym E. Juncker. German biographical sources identify her as a novelist, and a contemporary reference notes that she spent much of her childhood on her father's estate in the Uckermark, where she developed the close feeling for nature that later shaped her writing.

She became known for fiction centered on emotional and domestic conflicts, especially within marriage. German reference works point to novels such as Höhere Harmonie and describe her as a writer who treated personal and social tensions seriously while still aiming for satisfying resolutions.

Schmieden died in Berlin on August 8, 1896. Though not widely read in English today, her novels remained visible in library and bibliographic records, a sign of the steady readership she once had.
