About the author

Born in Evesham, Worcestershire, in December 1871, Edmund Hort New was an English artist and illustrator associated with the Birmingham Group. He studied at the Birmingham Municipal School of Art under Edward R. Taylor and Arthur Gaskin, and became known in the 1890s for black-and-white illustration rooted in Arts and Crafts ideals.

New worked closely with the artistic world around William Morris and is especially linked with Kelmscott Manor and the Kelmscott Press tradition. He built a strong reputation as a book illustrator, admired for detailed pen-and-ink work, decorative line, and affectionate views of old buildings and rural places.

Today he is remembered as one of the notable illustrators of his period, with a style that blends careful observation with the handmade beauty prized by the Arts and Crafts movement. His drawings continue to appeal to readers who enjoy classic book design as much as the texts themselves.
