Born in 1859, Edith Elise Cowper was an English author best known for writing under the name E. E. Cowper. She was also connected with missionary work, and her life in China shaped much of what she wrote.
Her books often reflect close observation of place and people, especially Chinese settings and the experiences of children and families. That firsthand background gave her writing a sense of immediacy and helped introduce many readers to parts of the world they might never have seen.
Cowper died in 1933. Though not widely known today, her work remains of interest to readers who enjoy older travel-influenced fiction and writing that grew out of real lived experience abroad.
