by Dudley M. Campbell
Born in Oneonta, New York, in 1836, Dudley M. Campbell spent much of his life closely tied to the town he later chronicled. Contemporary biographical material describes him as academically educated, a teacher of mathematics in the late 1850s, trained in law, and also a practical farmer who managed his family homestead.
Campbell is known for writing local history, especially A Sketch of the History of Oneonta (1883) and the expanded A History of Oneonta from its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time (1906). His work drew on recollections, local sources, and community memory, helping preserve details of Oneonta’s development that might otherwise have been lost.
He died in Oneonta on June 11, 1906. While little widely circulated biographical information survives, his reputation endures through the town histories he left behind, which continue to interest readers, researchers, and anyone curious about the story of a small New York community.
