by Dudley M. Campbell
Born in 1836 and active in Otsego County, New York, Dudley M. Campbell worked in several roles over his lifetime, including teacher, farmer, and lawyer. A biographical sketch also describes him as having received an academic education and having taught mathematics at Fergusonville Academy before teaching in other schools.
Campbell is best remembered for writing about the history of Oneonta. His A Sketch of the History of Oneonta was published in the 1880s, and he later expanded that work into A History of Oneonta from Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time, issued in 1905 and 1906. These books trace the town from its earliest settlement through later civic and social development.
He died in 1906. Although not a widely known literary figure, Campbell’s work has endured because it preserves local history in careful detail, giving later readers a vivid sense of how Oneonta remembered its own beginnings.
