author
A Connecticut businessman and local historian, he is remembered for writing a concise Civil War regimental history that has stayed in circulation through libraries, archives, and audiobook editions.
Born in Winsted, Connecticut, on August 30, 1873, he studied at Phillips Academy, Andover, and graduated from Yale in 1896. After college he joined George Dudley and Son, a leather manufacturing firm in Winsted, and later became its treasurer.
Alongside his business career, he remained closely connected to Yale and served for many years as secretary of the Yale Class of 1896. His papers at Yale include correspondence and memorabilia from his college years, showing how active he stayed in alumni life.
Readers know him best for The County Regiment (1908), a history of the Second Regiment of Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery, originally the Nineteenth Volunteer Infantry, in the Civil War. The book reflects his interest in Connecticut history and his talent for turning local records into an accessible narrative.
