Dru Drury

1725–1803

A London silversmith turned dedicated naturalist, he built one of the great insect collections of the 18th century and helped bring the wider world of butterflies and beetles to British readers. His richly illustrated books made exotic species vivid at a time when many were barely known in Europe.

About the author

Dru Drury was an English silversmith and entomologist whose passion for insects grew into a remarkable second career. Working from London, he assembled a collection said to contain more than 11,000 specimens, drawing on contacts with sailors and travelers who brought insects back from around the world.

He is best remembered for Illustrations of Natural History, a lavishly illustrated work published in three volumes in the late 18th century. The books helped introduce many readers to species from Africa, Asia, and the Americas, and they remain closely associated with the early study of insects.

Drury was also connected with the lively scientific culture of his time, corresponding with other naturalists and contributing to the growth of British entomology. His work stands out for combining careful observation with a collector's sense of wonder.
