About the author

Born in London in 1884, Douglas Gordon Browne came from a notably artistic family: he was the son of illustrator Gordon Browne and the grandson of Hablot K. Browne, better known as "Phiz." Although he was brought up with painting, reference sources describe him turning to writing in his late twenties, shortly before the First World War.

Browne became known as a British writer of detective fiction and nonfiction. Bibliographic sources credit him with mystery novels and with recurring detective characters including Major Maurice Hemyock and Harvey Tuke. He also wrote the 1951 book Bernard Spilsbury: His Life and Cases with E. V. Tullett, a biography of the famous forensic pathologist.

He died in 1963. For listeners who enjoy classic crime writing, his work offers a mix of puzzle-minded fiction and an interest in the real criminal cases and personalities that shaped early twentieth-century detective storytelling.
