Born in Breslau on July 29, 1847, Doris von Scheliha was a German writer from an old Bohemian Catholic noble family. She is also listed as Maria Doris von Scheliha and published under names including Doris von Spättgen and Doris Matuschka von Toppolczan Freiin von Spättgen.
At 17, she married Karl Joachim von Scheliha at Schloss Ostrawe. In 1873 the couple went to America, and she lived in New York until 1878. Sources note that her contact there with the diplomat and poet Bayard Taylor and other intellectuals helped lead her toward a literary career.
