Born in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1822, Donald Grant Mitchell studied at Yale and first pursued law before turning fully to writing. He traveled in Europe early in his career and also served briefly as a U.S. consul in Venice, experiences that fed his travel writing and essays.
Mitchell became widely known under the pseudonym Ik Marvel, especially after the success of Reveries of a Bachelor in 1850. He wrote essays, sketches, travel pieces, and fiction, including Dream Life, My Farm of Edgewood, and Doctor Johns, and he was often praised for his gentle, nostalgic style.
Much of his later life was centered on his Edgewood farm near New Haven, where his interest in country living shaped both his writing and public image. He died in 1908, remembered as a distinctive voice in 19th-century American letters whose books blended sentiment, observation, and a lasting love of home and landscape.
