Born in Norwich, Connecticut, Donald Grant Mitchell (1822–1908) was an American essayist, novelist, and editor who became famous under the pen name Ik Marvel. He studied at Yale and later worked in government service before turning fully to writing.
His breakthrough came with Reveries of a Bachelor in 1850, a reflective, conversational book that found a huge audience, followed by Dream Life and other popular works. Readers were drawn to his gentle, personal style, which mixed sentiment, humor, and observations about domestic life.
Mitchell spent much of his later life at his Connecticut home, where he continued to write on literature, rural life, and American history. Today he is remembered as a distinctive literary voice whose intimate essays captured the tastes and moods of his era.
