Donald E. (Donald Edward) Keyhoe

1897–1988

A Marine aviator turned prolific magazine writer, he helped shape two very different kinds of American fascination: early aviation adventure and the postwar UFO debate. His books and articles made him one of the most recognizable public voices arguing that unidentified flying objects deserved serious attention.

About the author

Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, in 1897, Donald Edward Keyhoe trained at the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a Marine Corps aviator. After leaving active service, he built a writing career around aviation, contributing articles and fiction to popular magazines and working for a time with Charles Lindbergh as a tour manager.

Keyhoe is best remembered today for his influential writing on unidentified flying objects. Beginning with a widely read magazine article and followed by books such as Flying Saucers Are Real, he became one of the best-known advocates for taking UFO reports seriously in mid-20th-century America.

His career gives him an unusual place in popular history: part military flyer, part pulp-era storyteller, and part public investigator of one of the century’s enduring mysteries. He died in 1988.
