About the author

Born in Iowa in 1905, Mildred Augustine Wirt Benson built a remarkable career as a journalist and writer of children's books. She became especially famous for writing many of the earliest Nancy Drew mysteries under the Stratemeyer Syndicate name Carolyn Keene, helping shape Nancy into an energetic, independent heroine.

Benson wrote widely under her own name and several pseudonyms, including Don Palmer. Under that name, she authored the Boy Scout Explorers books in the 1950s, bringing the same brisk pace and sense of adventure that made her mystery writing so memorable.

Her writing life stretched across decades and included more than books alone: she also worked as a reporter and remained closely tied to journalism for much of her life. She died in 2002, leaving behind a body of work that influenced generations of young readers.
