About the author

Born in Saint Petersburg in 1865, Dmitri Merezhkovsky became one of the central figures of the Russian Symbolist movement. He wrote poetry, novels, literary criticism, and religious essays, and he was known for treating literature as a way to explore faith, history, and the fate of civilization.

He worked closely with his wife, the poet and writer Zinaida Gippius, and together they were part of an influential literary circle in Russia. Merezhkovsky gained wide attention for his historical fiction, especially the trilogy Christ and Antichrist, which includes novels about Julian the Apostate, Leonardo da Vinci, and Peter and Alexei.

After the Russian Revolution, he lived in exile, first in Poland and then in Paris, where he continued to write and lecture. He died in Paris in 1941, leaving behind a body of work that helped shape the spiritual and intellectual side of the Russian Silver Age.
