About the author

Born in Lamego, Portugal, in 1750, Diogo de Carvalho e Sampaio built a career in public life as a judge and diplomat. He was also a knight of the Order of Malta, and his work took him beyond the literary world usually associated with audiobook listeners.

What makes him especially interesting today is his writing on chromatics, or the study of color. He became known for two important works on the subject, including Tratado das cores, which explored color in a systematic way at a time when science, philosophy, and observation often overlapped.

He died in 1807. Though not widely known to modern readers, his work offers a glimpse into a period when learned writers moved easily between law, diplomacy, and scientific thought.
