A Spanish Dominican missionary, bishop, and chronicler of the early church in the Philippines, he is remembered for writing one of the key firsthand histories of Dominican work in the region. His life joined scholarship, pastoral work, and long years of service far from his native Zaragoza.
Born in Zaragoza in 1569, Diego Aduarte entered the Dominican Order after studying at Alcalá. He traveled to the Philippines in the 1590s and worked in Manila, where sources note that he ministered especially among the Chinese community.
Over the years he held several important roles in the Dominican mission. He became known not only as a church leader but also as a careful historian, and his best-known work is the Historia de la Provincia del Santo Rosario de Filipinas, Japón y China, an important early account of Dominican missionary activity in the Philippines and across East Asia.
Later in life he was appointed bishop of Nueva Segovia. He died in the Philippines in 1636, leaving behind a record that still matters because it preserves details about missionary life, colonial society, and the religious history of the region.
