About the author

Founded in 1873 by James E. Scripps, The Detroit News began as The Evening News and grew into one of Detroit’s two major daily newspapers. Over time it absorbed other local papers, including the Detroit Tribune and the Detroit Journal, helping shape the city’s newspaper landscape.

The paper has a notable place in media history. It has been credited with operating the radio station 8MK in 1920, later known as WWJ, and it also established Michigan’s first television station in 1947. In 1989, it entered a long joint operating agreement with its longtime rival, the Detroit Free Press, while keeping a separate newsroom and editorial identity.

Today, The Detroit News remains a major source of local reporting in Detroit and Michigan. It has won three Pulitzer Prizes, and its long history reflects both the competitive energy of American newspapers and Detroit’s own changing story.
