About the author

Born in Edinburgh on January 11, 1815, he was the third son of the celebrated engineer Robert Stevenson and chose early on to follow the family profession. Educated at the High School and University of Edinburgh, he went on to become a civil engineer and lighthouse designer at a time when safe coastal navigation was vital to trade and travel.

Working in the family firm, he helped continue the Stevenson dynasty of lighthouse engineering and is credited with designing more than 30 lighthouses in and around Scotland. His career was closely tied to major maritime works, and he later retired through ill health before his death on July 17, 1886.

He is also remembered as part of the wider Stevenson family that included fellow engineers and the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, his nephew. For readers today, his story offers a glimpse of a practical, inventive world where engineering skill quite literally helped keep ships and sailors safe.
