About the author

Born in Edinburgh on January 11, 1815, he was the son of lighthouse engineer Robert Stevenson and part of the remarkable Stevenson family of engineers. He studied in Edinburgh and trained in his father’s office, building the practical skills that would define his career.

He became known as a civil engineer and lighthouse designer, creating more than 30 lighthouses in and around Scotland. Beyond lighthouse work, he was involved in harbor, river, and marine engineering, and he shared that experience in books including Sketch of the Civil Engineering of North America.

He died on July 17, 1886. Remembered for both his engineering work and his place in a notable Scottish family, he helped continue a tradition of coastal design and public service that influenced generations.
