About the author

Raised in California after his family moved west when he was a child, he studied at Pomona College, earned a master's degree at the University of California, and later completed a Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Chicago. Early in his career, he was known for research on Native communities in California and for work connected to education and administration in the Philippines.

He later became a major figure at the University of California, serving as the university's president from 1919 to 1923. Beyond campus life, he also had a long military connection and eventually retired with the rank of major general.

Remembered as an anthropologist, explorer, officer, and educator, his life brought together scholarship, administration, and public service in a way that was unusually wide-ranging even for his time.
