About the author

Born in Chicago on June 27, 1873, and raised in California, he studied at Pomona College and the University of California before beginning a wide-ranging career in anthropology and public affairs. Early in his career he worked in the Philippines, where he served in education and government roles while also carrying out ethnological research.

Barrows later returned to academic life at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught political science and became president of the university from 1919 to 1923. He was known as a scholar with broad interests and as an administrator who helped guide the university in the years just after World War I.

His public service continued alongside his academic work. He served in the U.S. Army and remained active in national and international affairs, building a reputation as both a university leader and a man deeply engaged with the wider world. He died in 1954.
