About the author

Born in London on December 25, 1853, David McDowall Hannay was the son of James Hannay, a former Royal Navy officer who later became a journalist and novelist. He was educated at Westminster School and for a time served as vice-consul in Barcelona, following his father into public service before building his own career in letters.

Hannay became known as a journalist, lecturer, and especially as a naval historian. He wrote widely on maritime subjects and produced books including studies of Admiral Blake, Rodney, and Nelson, as well as broader histories of the Royal Navy. His work was valued for making naval history accessible without losing sight of the personalities and politics behind it.

He died on May 29, 1934. Remembered as one of the best-known popular naval historians of his day, Hannay helped bring Britain’s maritime story to a wide reading audience.
