About the author

Born in London on December 25, 1853, he was the son of James Hannay, a former Royal Navy officer who later became a journalist and novelist. He was educated at Westminster School and then spent time in Barcelona, where he worked with his father, who was serving there as a British consul.

His writing career ranged across journalism, fiction, and history, but naval history became his best-known field. He wrote studies of the Royal Navy and biographies of figures including Admiral Rodney, balancing solid historical interest with a style aimed at general readers.

He died on May 29, 1934. Although not widely read today, his books helped shape popular understanding of British naval history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
