About the author

Born in Dublin on September 17, 1882, he spent part of his childhood in London and Ceylon before returning to literary life in Britain and Ireland. He worked in publishing, wrote poetry and prose, and became known as part of the cultural and political world around the Irish Revival.

He later threw himself into Irish nationalism, joining Sinn Féin and taking part in major public events of the independence period. After the creation of the Irish Free State, he served as an independent parliamentarian and also played a role in work connected with the new state's constitutional development.

His life was marked by ambition, controversy, and personal hardship, and he died in 1925 at the age of 43. Though less widely remembered than some of his contemporaries, he remains a striking figure at the meeting point of Irish literature and revolutionary politics.
