About the author

Known in English as Shen Dao, he was a Chinese philosopher and writer active during the Warring States period, usually dated to around the 4th to 3rd century BCE. Traditional and modern reference works describe him as a thinker connected with the Jixia Academy and as an important predecessor to later political philosophy in China.

Only part of his writing survives, but those surviving fragments are still significant. Scholars often note his influence on later thinkers such as Han Fei, and his work is also discussed in relation to Daoist thought. That mix makes him an especially interesting figure for listeners curious about the overlap between political theory, ethics, and classical Chinese philosophy.

Because so much of his original work has been lost, Shen Dao can feel a little mysterious today. Even so, the ideas preserved under his name have kept him in the long conversation about authority, method, and the way human societies are organized.
