About the author

Born in Roseau, Dominica, on December 2, 1879, to Martinican parents, Daniel Thaly built a literary career in French while remaining closely tied to the Caribbean. He studied in Martinique and later in France, including medical studies, and became known for poetry that drew on Antillean landscapes, memory, and regional life.

During the first decades of the 20th century, he earned a notable reputation in the French-speaking world and was often described as a major Antillean poet. His books helped bring Caribbean settings and sensibilities into French literary conversations, even as later readers debated how his work fit within changing political and cultural movements.

He died in Dominica on October 1, 1950. Today he is remembered as an important early Caribbean poet in French, with a body of work that connects island experience, lyric craft, and the literary history of the French Antilles.
