About the author

Born in Southwick, Sussex, Clara Butt studied at the Royal College of Music and quickly drew attention for the scale and color of her contralto voice. She built her reputation in concert halls rather than opera houses, becoming especially admired in oratorio, recital work, and public performances that could reach huge audiences.

Her career stretched across Britain, Europe, Australia, and North America, and she became particularly associated with songs such as Land of Hope and Glory. In 1900 she married the baritone Robert Kennerley Rumford, and the two often performed together.

Clara Butt was made a Dame in 1920, a sign of how widely she was admired in British musical life. She remained a major public performer for many years, and her name is still remembered as one of the great contralto voices of her era.
