About the author

Giovanni Buralli, usually known as John of Parma or Giovanni da Parma, was born in Parma around 1208 or 1209 and died in 1289. Educated by an uncle connected with the church of San Lazzaro, he became known early for his learning and is described in historical sources as a teacher of philosophy before joining the Franciscans.

After entering the Order of Friars Minor, he taught theology in major centers including Bologna and Naples, and sources also place him in Paris. In 1247 he was chosen Minister General of the Franciscans, a role in which he traveled widely and tried to restore the order's original discipline and simplicity.

His later years were marked by controversy around Joachimite ideas, and he eventually stepped down, with Bonaventure succeeding him. After that, he spent many years in a more withdrawn religious life at Greccio, and he died at Camerino while traveling on a mission connected with church unity.
