About the author

Born in Parma around 1209, Giovanni da Parma—better known in English as John of Parma—became one of the most important Franciscans of his era. Sources describe him as a learned friar who later served as the seventh minister general of the Friars Minor from 1247 to 1257, a period when the order was wrestling with how closely to follow the ideals of Saint Francis.

He was especially known for efforts to renew discipline and simplicity within the Franciscan movement. Later accounts also connect him with attempts to help steady the Church during a time of division, and they remember him as a figure of prayer as well as leadership.

He died at Camerino on March 19, 1289. He is honored in the Catholic tradition as Blessed John of Parma, and his story has endured as that of a reformer who tried to hold together conviction, humility, and service.
