About the author

Born in Dublin on March 2, 1888, Cyril Bentham Falls was educated in Ireland and England before building a career that joined journalism, teaching, and military history. He served in the British Army during the First World War, including staff work with the 36th (Ulster) Division, and that wartime experience shaped much of his later writing.

Falls is best remembered for his histories of the First World War, especially work connected with the 36th (Ulster) Division and the British official history of the war. From the 1920s onward, he helped write major accounts of the conflict and earned a reputation for explaining campaigns with both authority and humanity.

He spent most of his life in England and continued writing well beyond the war years, also working as a journalist and academic. Falls died on April 23, 1971, leaving behind books that remain valued by readers interested in military history and the lived experience of war.
