A longtime Iowa newspaper editor who brought a reporter’s eye to politics and history, he later served more than a decade in Congress. His books and public work helped preserve stories of the Midwest and the pioneers who shaped it.
Born near Pella, Iowa, in 1863, Cyrenus Cole studied at Central College and built his early career in journalism. He became known as a newspaper editor and columnist, work that shaped the clear, factual style he later brought to both politics and historical writing.
Cole went on to serve as a Republican U.S. representative from Iowa’s 5th congressional district for more than eleven years. Alongside his political career, he wrote history with a strong interest in Iowa, the Midwest, and the American frontier.
He died in 1939, leaving behind a career that bridged newspapers, public service, and regional history. He is remembered not only as a congressman, but also as a writer who helped record the people and events of his state.
