About the author

Born Victor Eugène Géruzez in Paris in 1840, Crafty was a French humorist, illustrator, and man of letters who wrote and drew under a memorable pseudonym. He was the son of literary historian Nicolas Eugène Géruzez, and his own work blended observation, satire, and drawing in a style that made everyday scenes feel brisk and animated.

Crafty became best known for books about horses, riding, racing, and hunting on horseback. His work often focused on equestrian culture and social life, and he paired text with his own illustrations, giving readers both commentary and character in the same volume.

He died in Saint-Martin-de-Nigelles in 1906. Today, he is remembered as a distinctive late-19th-century French voice whose books captured the manners, comedy, and excitement of horse-centered life.
