Born Victor Eugène Géruzez in Paris on May 24, 1840, he worked under the name Crafty. He became known in France as an illustrator, caricaturist, and author whose work focused especially on horses, riding, hunting, and fashionable outdoor life.
Crafty built his reputation through illustrated books and albums that captured the habits, humor, and rituals of the sporting world. His style was sharp and observant, with a light satirical touch, and his drawings helped document a very specific side of French social life in the late 1800s.
He died on May 26, 1906, in Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Today he is remembered both as a writer and as a visual chronicler of equestrian and hunting culture.
