Best known by the pen name Crádh Croidhe Éigeas, he was in fact Osborn Joseph Bergin (Irish: Osborn Ó hAimhirgín). Bergin was born in Cork in 1873 and became an important Irish scholar, especially in the study of the Irish language and early Irish literature.
He studied at Queen's College Cork and later continued advanced work in Celtic languages in Germany. Alongside his academic career, he also wrote poetry in Irish, and Maidean i mBéarra agus Dánta Eile was published under the name Crádh Croidhe Éigeas.
Bergin is remembered both for his scholarship and for the clarity and feeling of his Irish writing. He died in 1950, but he still holds a respected place in Irish literary and language history.
